Skype for android

Skype /ˈskaɪp/ is a freemium voice-over-IP service and instant messaging client, currently developed by the Microsoft Skype Division. The name was derived from "sky" and "peer".[15]

Skype was first released in August 2003. It was created by Janus Friis (Denmark) and Niklas Zennström (Sweden) in cooperation

with Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, and Jaan Tallinn (Estonia), who supplied the backend which was also used inKazaa.[16] Skype had 663 million registered users as of the end of 2010.[17] It was bought by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion. Microsoft's Skype division headquarters is in Luxembourg, but most of the development team and 44% of the overall employees of the division are still situated in Tallinn and Tartu, Estonia.[18][19][20]

The service allows users to communicate with peers by voice using a microphone, video by using a webcam, and instant messaging over the Internet. Phone calls may be placed to recipients on the traditional telephone networks. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free of charge, while calls to landline telephones and mobile phones are charged via adebit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features, including file transfer, andvideoconferencing. Competitors include SIP and H.323-based services, such as Linphone[21] and Google Hangouts.

Unlike most other VoIP services, Skype is a hybrid peer-to-peer and client–server system. It makes use of background processing on computers running Skype software, and this is reflected in Skype's original proposed name of Sky Peer-to-Peer.

Some network administrators have banned Skype on corporate, government, home and education networks,[22] citing reasons such as inappropriate usage of resources, excessive bandwidth usage, and security concerns.[23]

WhatsApp Messenger

WhatsApp Messenger is a proprietary, cross-platform instant messaging subscription service for smartphones that uses the internet for communication. In addition to text messaging, users can send each other images, video, and audio media messages as well as their location using integrated mapping features. The client software is available for Google Android, BlackBerry OS, AppleiOS, selected Nokia Series 40, Symbian, selected Nokia Asha platform, Microsoft Windows Phone and BlackBerry 10. WhatsApp Inc. was founded in 2009 by Americans Brian Acton and Jan Koum (also the CEO), both former employees of Yahoo!, and is based inMountain View, California.[1][2] The company employs 55 people.[3]

Competing with a number of Asian-based messaging services (like LINE, KakaoTalk, WeChat, Telegram), WhatsApp handled ten billion messages per day in August 2012,[4] growing from two billion in April 2012,[5] and one billion the previous October.[6] On June 13, 2013, WhatsApp announced that they had reached their new daily record by processing 27 billion messages.[7] According to theFinancial Times, WhatsApp "has done to SMS on mobile phones what Skype did to international calling on landlines."[8]

Viber was born on February 14, 2014 by Japanese company Rakuten adopted [2] .

The use of Viber services when communicating with other Viber users is free, but it falls to the normal cost of Internet access. Out calls are chargeable (pre-paid cCredit). Call charges may be calculated on the website. [3]

Privacy
Viber is due to poor data protection in the criticism. Viber collects data in considerable amounts, which go far beyond the usual measure of other VoIP providers (eg Skype), both by users as well as non-users of the service. Many of these data are stored without the consent of and without the knowledge of the persons concerned in each case, in violation of European data protection law. [4]

Viber keeps a low profile with details on the company. Thus, it is unclear where and, where appropriate, for which purpose the collected data will be stored or get into whose hands it. [4]

Google Hangouts is an instant messaging and video chat platform developed by Google, which launched on May 15, 2013 during the keynote of its I/O development conference. It replaces three messaging products that Google had implemented concurrently within its services, including Talk, Google+ Messenger, and Hangouts, a video chat system present within Google+. Google has also stated that Hangouts is designed to be "the future" of its telephony product, Google Voice, and integrated some of the capabilities of Google Voice into Hangouts.[1]

Prior to the launch of Hangouts, Google had maintained several similar, but technologically separate messaging services and platforms across its suite of products. These have included the enterprise-oriented Google Talk (based on XMPP), Google+Messenger, and the Hangouts feature of Google+, which allows for group videoconferencing with up to 10 users at once. However, its increasingly fragmented and non-unified suite of messaging offerings was also facing growing competition from services such as Facebook Messenger, iMessage, and WhatsApp. A decision was made to scrap the existing Google Talk system and code a new messaging product through a collaboration with multiple development teams.[2]


Following reports that the new service would be known as "Babel", the service officially launched as Hangouts during the Google I/O conference on May 15, 2013.[2][3]

Hangouts allows users to hold conversations between two or more users. The service can be accessed online through the Gmail or Google+ websites, or through mobile appsavailable for Android and iOS (which were distributed as a successor to their existing Google Talk apps). However, because it uses a proprietary protocol[2] instead of the XMPPopen standard protocol used by Google Talk, most third-party applications which had access to Google Talk do not have access to Google+ Hangouts. In contrast, the GVJackApp for magicJack and the GVMate Phone Adapter both of which are signalling independent will not be adversely affected and will continue to work for users as normal using the Google+ Hangouts platform after support for XMPP has been terminated.[4]

Line began as a response to disaster. Japan's devastating Tōhoku earthquake in March 2011 damaged telecommunications infrastructure nationwide, obliging employees at NHN Japan, a unit of Korea's NHN Corp, to rely on Internet-based resources to communicate. The company's engineers developed Line to facilitate this. NHN Japan released Line for public use in June 2011.[9]


The application proved hugely popular and by late October Line experienced an unexpected server overload.[10] After concluding that the scalability process needed to be improved, NHN Japan chose to adopt HBase as the primary storage for user profiles, contacts, and groups.[11] Within eighteen months of its release Line reached 100 million users; six months later it reached 200 million[1][8][9] and on November 25, 2013 is used by 300 million users or doubling in just 7 months.[12]


On July 3, 2012, NHN Japan announced the new Line features "Home" and "Timeline." The features allowed users to share recent personal developments to a community of contacts in real-time, similar to the status reports in social networking services.[13]


On 6 February 2013, the success of Line led NHN Japan to announce a new spinoff company named Line Corporation. Line Corporation, based in Japan, continues to develop Internet resources such as Line, the Naver Japan search portal, and the LivedoorISP and blog platform. Games, including those for the Line Game brand, remain under the auspices of Hangame Japan. A new joint venture named Line Plus Corporation, also based in Japan, develops overseas markets. At launch the majority of Line Plus shares were held by the newly created Line Corporation (60%) with the remaining shares (40%) held by its Korean parent NHN Corp.[8]

Messenger for Mobile was released on August 9, 2011 for iOS and Android, with an October 11 update making the app available for BlackBerry OS.[8]


In December 2012, the Facebook Messenger app for Android in some regions (such as Australia, India, Indonesia, South Africa, and Venezuela) added the ability to use Messenger without a Facebook account by simply using a name and phone number. These changes are intended to allow Facebook Messenger to compete against similar mobile messaging platforms such as WhatsApp as an alternative to text messaging.[9] Later updates added the ability to use Facebook Messenger as a replacement text messaging client on Android, and added "Chat Heads", an overlay chat system originating from Facebook Home.[10]

Many smartphones offer access to the Facebook services either through their web browsers or applications. Google's Android 2.0 OS automatically includes an official Facebook app. The first device to use this is the Motorola Droid. The app has options to sync Facebook friends with contacts, which adds profile pictures and status updates to the contacts list. Research In Motion also offers a Facebook application for the BlackBerry. Functions include an ability to integrate Facebook events into the BlackBerry calendar, and using Facebook profile pictures for Caller ID.[89]


"Status updates" (also called as a "status") allows users to post messages for their friends to read. In turn, friends can respond with their own comments, as well as clicking the "Like" button. A user's most recent updates appear at the top of their Timeline/Wall and are also noted in the "Recently Updated" section of a user's friend list. Originally, the purpose of the feature was to allow users to inform their friends of their current "status", including feelings, whereabouts, or actions, where Facebook prompted the status update with "Username is"... and users filled in the rest. This feature first became available in September 2006, though on December 13, 2007, the requirement to start a status update with is was removed.[90]


The is updates were followed by the "What are you doing right now?" status update question; in March 2009, the question was changed to "What's on your mind?"[91] In 2009, Facebook added the feature to tag certain friends (or groups, etc.) within one's status update by adding an @ character before their name, turning the friend's name into a link to their profile and including the message on the friend's wall. Tagging has since been updated to recognize friends' names by typing them into a status while a list of friends whose names match the inputted letters appears. A large percentage of the updates that are posted are humorous and as a result, many apps, websites and books have sprung up to help users to update their own.
